The Critical Role of the Coach and the Coach-Athlete Relationship

In this 7-part video presentation, Bo Hanson discusses some of the essentials for sports coaching that all coaches should be aware of to take their coaching to the next level.  It covers the importance of the coach-athlete relationship, critical communication skills, traditional verses athlete centered coaching and much more.   This presentation was to the State Swimming Coaches at their annual conference, and they have been generous in allowing us to share this with you.

Part 1 – Coach Athlete Relationships and the Critical Role of the Coach

In Part 1 Bo introduces the ‘Coaching Challenge’ which this presentation will focus on, and discusses the critical role of the coach. Including his own experiences, Bo illustrates why effective Coach Athlete Relationships lead to success on and off the field.

Part 2 – Critical Communication Skills for Coaches

In Part 2 Bo Hanson talks about why communication skills are critical for a successful coach-athlete relationship. He discusses what makes for effective communication between a coach and an athlete, and how you can become a more effective communicator.

Part 3 – How to Avoid “Traditional” Sports Coaching

In Part 3 Bo discusses the pitfalls of “traditional” sports coaching.  Traditional coaching can put too much emphasis on the skills side of a coach athlete relationship. This can be detrimental to an athlete’s or team’s success, as often when teams underperform, emotional issues are at the root of the problem.

Part 4 – Athlete Centered Coaching

In Part 4 Bo looks at how understanding yourself, and your athletes can help strengthen your relationship with your athletes. Utilizing effective communication will help you become an Athlete Centered Coach. Bo talks about how creating the atmosphere for your team to be successful in, starts with the coach as the leader.

Part 5 – Tips for Athlete Centered Coaching

In Part 5 Bo discusses his top 10 tips to become better at Athlete Centered Coaching. With everything from videoing yourself, to keeping a journal and finding a mentor who is also athlete centered, you are sure to find some tips which will work for you to become the most effective coach you can be.

Part 6 – What Expert Coaches have in Common

In Part 6 Bo Hanson discusses what makes and an expert coach. Is it their ability to innovate, place emphasis on their athletes or their ability to effectively communicate? Find out in this video as Bo also explores personal coaching styles, and how can you bring your own style to your coaching.

Part 7 – How to Better Understand your Athletes

In the final part of this presentation, Bo talks about how you can better understand your athletes. The importance of expected behavior, values and goal setting at the beginning of a season is also highlighted.
