George Naughton has a long history with Athlete Assessments and has been using Athlete Assessments’ DISC Profiles within his consultancy for over five years. He enjoyed enormous success in 2016 when one of his clients, the Villanova Men’s Basketball Team, won the D1 National Championship. George shares his personal insights with us in this Q&A.

What are you most proud of in your work as a consultant?
The thing I’m most proud of is simply receiving a ‘thank you’ from Coaches, student-athletes and parents. To know that you were able to provide a tangible tool and a simple approach that helped in their personal growth is very gratifying.

Can you tell us a few of your career highlights?
After receiving an athletic scholarship and attending the University of Tennessee I became a senior manager with a Fortune 100 company. I had the opportunity to work in the US and internationally. Each step brought me to this point with my greatest career highlight in front of me. I LOVE athletics and believe our process and services will greatly enhance Coach-player relationships and overall team performance.

Who has been your biggest supporter or mentor throughout your career?
I have gained valuable insight from many people throughout my business career. However, my wife has been my biggest supporter. When I re-directed our business to focus on college athletics my wife realized that it would take time to develop a process and approach to meet the needs of college Coaches. Her unwavering support has gotten me to the place I am today.

Can you share an ‘ah-ha’ moment in your career?
I was exposed to DISC over 20 years ago. The self-awareness that I received from my own DISC assessment allowed me to better understand myself and other people. The knowledge gained and process used was the KEY reason our management team was able to turn-around a plant that was losing $1 M a day. I have seen the impact DISC can have on individual and team performance. The goal of every company or team is for employees and players to bring their BODY, MIND and HEART to work or to their team. Unfortunately, most just bring their BODY.

What is your most inspirational quote?
Years ago, I used Lou Holtz’s approach along with DISC to help bring about change. This quote can be applied in business, athletics or personally. “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” Lou Holtz.

What are you working towards in the future?
We’re aggressively working to build and improve our process and work with Coaches that are open-minded and looking to take their programs to the next level. We’re also in the process of using the DISC Career Management Report to help prepare transitioning athletes into a career. I feel we can provide the tools, guidance and preparation needed for a student-athlete to achieve their career goals.

How has working with Athlete Assessments contributed to your program and what value have you gotten from it?
I would not have focused my business in college athletics had Athlete Assessments methodology not been DISC. Having been a former college athlete and 20 years of experience with DISC, I knew there was an opportunity to help maximize Coach-player relationships and improve performance. I am extremely appreciative for all the support and help over the past years. I believe that Coaches are beginning to understand and realize that the “people side” is ALWAYS the defining reason for not achieving individual and team goals. That realization will allow us to help those programs.

George Naughton is a consultant using Athlete Assessments DISC Profiling tools. As a former collegiate athlete, it wasn’t until he was introduced to DISC that he realized his individual performance could have improved if he would have been introduced to the profiling while he was in college. He believes DISC is the single most profound tool used to increase individual, team or company performance.

In 1998, George and his wife Linda founded consulting company Synergistic Resources. He partnered with Resource Associates Corporation (RAC) to assist in creating, building and expanding a successful consulting practice. He currently works with a number of athletic clients including the Villanova Men’s Basketball team.
