Few coaches, if any, are immune to dealing with conflict, team chaos or various athlete clashes or cliques during their season. If we are not careful, these challenges can bring you close to, or actually, destroy your season. It seems, whenever we have a mix of different styles of people working together, there are always ‘issues’. However, is it possible that these various ‘issues’ could be dealt with in such a way as to build team unity and increase team strengths?

If you are the type of coach who knows there is more to your team’s success than simply having ‘talented’ athletes or a technically proficient team, then you’ll love this session. Starting with a review of the ‘Stages of Team Development’ and coupled with using the ‘DISC Model’ of behavior in sport, this session shows you how to confidently navigate your way through the sport pre-season and season with the very best chance of success.

We draw back the curtains on the inner workings of different DISC behavioral styles, how they combine, come into conflict and complement each other. DISC encapsulates the foundations of team success, is a model for understanding what makes your athletes ‘tick’ and is what you need to create the all-important alignment within the team to achieve their full potential. We discuss the necessity of embracing the conflict and challenges that occurs when different people strive for high level goals. Most importantly, we develop a framework to ensure the factors contributing to team success are ticked off, before ‘issues’ have the chance to undermine your season. This session is for those coaches who know that prevention is far better than a cure when it comes to the ‘people side’ of sport. Let’s face it, sport is played by people!

The key learning objectives for the session participants are:

  • Learn the four stages of team development.
  • Understand the challenges associated with each stage of team development.
  • Develop strategies to deal with the challenges during each stage of team development.
  • Identify the varying behavioral styles of athletes in your team.
  • Discover what conflict may be caused by the varying behavioral styles on your team.
  • Discover the importance of setting a framework of expectations and to benefit your team.
