November 2009 Newsletter to Clients and Contacts
Good morning
As part of our commitment to keeping you informed, here is our latest update containing:
- The results of the Coach Survey from the Evolution of the Athlete conference.
- Research from the Canadian Olympic Committee post Beijing about the performance gains of a quality coach-athlete relationship (very important research - in plain English!).
- An article about what coaches can do to develop improved athlete decision making (this was a much talked about issue at the conference).
- We’ve also just launched our latest DVD on our website and have a great special offer.
We’ve compiled the results of the Coaches Survey and here are the highlights:
- 52% of coaches have spent less than 5 days on leadership development in the last 2 years (this compares to about a third of the average in Australian business, which is actually way behind international standards – are we being left behind?).
- A staggering 52% of coaches do not have a mentor or ‘coaching coach’ they can get support from for their coaching.
- Only 17% of coaches spend time with their coaching mentor on at least a fortnightly basis.
- 79% of coaches use the internet for researching how to improve their coaching (this is a great reflection that coaches are taking advantage of the internet and why we are pleased to provide so many resources on our site).

For last year’s results (2008 Conference), go to: Coach Survey Results from the 2008 Evolution of the Athlete Conference.
We’ve compiled the results of the Coaches Survey and here are the highlights:
One of the most recent and compelling studies about the quality of the coach athlete relationship on an athlete’s ultimate performance has been conducted by Penny Wurthner for the Canadian Olympic Team. This article shares the key learnings of this study (post Beijing) and applies the athlete centered approach.
To read the article, go to: Success of Coach Athlete Relationships (Canadian Olympic Study).
Please note, our latest DVD is on this specific topic of Coach-Athlete relationships. Click here for more information: Our latest DVD.
3, THE COACH'S ROLE IN ATHLETES IMPROVING THEIR DECISION MAKINGBased on the discussion at a number of the Conference sessions, I thought you’d appreciate being sent more information on this topic. This article discusses how decision making is a learnt skill, how to develop it, and the link between your athletes developing the skill and your coaching style.
To read the article, go to: How to Improve Athlete Decision Making Skills.
4, SPECIAL OFFER FOR COACH-ATHLETE RELATIONSHIP DVDWe had such a strong response to our DVD at the conference that we've decided to share a special launch offer for our website purchases. Click Our latest DVD.
Please let me know how I can assist you further.
And lastly, my current favorite quote:
"Athletes don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."
(Inspired by Jim Tunney’s words)
Have a great week!
My best regards,
Liz Hanson and the Athlete Assessments Team
