About Bo Hanson
In 1992, at just 18, Bo Hanson became Australia’s youngest rower to compete at the Olympics. Bo went on to win bronze medals at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. During his Olympic career, Bo Hanson studied at the University of Technology Sydney and began his 15 years of experience in corporate training, development and facilitation.
Watch Bo Hanson discuss his rowing career, the coaches that had the most significant impact on him and how this has molded his personal experiences.
Utilizing the learning experiences from four Olympics and his training and development qualifications, Bo founded two businesses, Team 8 and Athlete Assessments. Both businesses are designed to enable people to achieve their best performances whatever their field of endeavor.
With Athlete Assessments, Bo has worked with more than 15,000 individuals in sports organizations including coaches, athletes, and sports administrators. This work has spanned 24 different sports and several countries.
Bo is an internationally respected coaching consultant who has spoken at more than 100 International Sporting Conferences. In Keynote Presentations, Bo regularly speaks about athlete-centered coaching, leadership, teamwork and how to use behavioral profiling and emotional intelligence to create greater success. These are lessons Bo learnt during his Olympic career and they absolutely apply to business and personal lives just as much as in sport.
Highly educated and accredited in the use of DISC Profiling, Emotional Intelligence (Emotional Competence Inventory 360), the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator plus several other personality and behavioral modelling tools, Bo incorporates these tools into the customized programs he delivers.
In the corporate world, through Team 8, Bo has been training and presenting to Australia’s largest companies for over 15 years. These companies include American Express, Fairfax Digital and Media, The Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Macquarie Bank, Bain Consulting, Insurance Australia Group, Telstra and many others. Bo is highly regarded for his expertise in leadership development and all aspects of teamwork, such as culture development, team behaviors and communication principles and structures.
With Athlete Assessments, I have been fortunate enough to have worked with more than 15,000 coaches, athletes, and sports administrators. This work has spanned 24 different sports and several countries.
In all this time one thing is clear. Successful people all know what the defining factor for consistent high performance is. Technical or physical ability is never the defining factor for top performance. Always it is managing the 'people side' of sport. To quote coach Mike Kryzewski
"A common mistake among those who work in sport is spending a disproportional amount of time on "x's and o's" as compared to time spent learning about people."
Research from the 2008 Beijing Olympics study supports this, showing the top factors contributing to a personal best or medal-winning performance were a strong coach–athlete relationship, and a high level of athlete self-awareness. So how do you, your staff and colleagues fare? Whether you are an athlete, coach or in sport management, relationships and how well people work together is a defining factor in sporting success.
Top performers are always looking for ways they can continue to improve, and pursue the 0.1% to stay ahead of the pack. So what's your game changer this season?
Be prepared to chase the 0.1% improvements!
Athlete Assessments started with Bo Hanson, an Australian rower who competed in four Olympic Games, and won three bronze medals. As an athlete, Bo constantly strove for the minute adjustments which could create a big changes in his performance.Towards the end of his Olympic career, Bo searched for a way to understand his behavior and how it related to his training, racing and performance results. This led Bo to extensively study DISC behavioral theory, the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator, Emotional Intelligence and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Bo learnt about his strengths and how to use them more often, and how to improve upon his limitations. DISC Theory enabled Bo to understand his fellow crewmembers and how to build more productive and fulfilling relationships with them.
Thanks to his understanding of DISC and behavioral profiling, Bo found the latter stages of his rowing career became the most successful and enjoyable years he spent in rowing.
Prior to retiring from his competitive career in 2004, Bo became an expert in DISC behavioral theory and application. At that time the DISC model was most relevant to those in the business world, and whilst it was somewhat useful to Bo as an athlete, he observed that it was not designed to really meet the specific needs of sport.
So, together with a team of passionate experts including sports coaches, IT developers and other DISC accredited professionals, Bo developed the AthleteDISC Profile, and founded Athlete Assessments in 2007. In doing this, Athlete Assessments gave athletes around the world the first sports specific version of DISC theory and behavior profiling.
Because athletes and coaches have different needs, the CoachDISC Profile, a similar tool specifically for sports coaches, followed in early 2009. After many requests from clients, in early 2011 the Sports ManagerDISC was launched as the latest professional development tool specifically for sports managers and administrators.
In late 2012 Athlete Assessments launched their Performance Review Services for Coaches, Athlete Leaders and Sports Managers. This included the development of the Athlete Assessments Coach 360, Sports Manager 360 and Athlete Leader 360.For more on our DISC Profiles or Performance Reviews, see our Services or Contact Us. Our Goals
Athlete Assessments was created to provide behavioral profiling tools for athletes, coaches, and sports administrators so they could improve performance and realize their true potential.
Athlete Assessments wants to help athletes enjoy their sport as much as possible. So much enjoyment in sport comes from making small improvements to your performance. If this means you win more races or games, then that is a bonus.
For coaches, Athlete Assessments recognizes the incredible contribution every coach can make to the lives of the athletes they look after. Not only are coaches mentors and role models who shape young athletes' commitment to and enthusiasm for a sport, coaches impact athletes' whole lives outside of sport as well.
We also recognize that much of a team's success relies on the best team management and administration. We also provide professional development specifically for sports managers and administrators. Often, all of the focus is on the coaches and athletes and the very people that provide all of the support and service to this group miss out on their own professional development. We are working to change this.
Athlete Assessments is passionate about striving for greater sporting performances and the on-going development of sport, coaches and athletes. That's why we are also passionate about the importance of profiling in sport today. Engaging our services sends a strong positive message to your coaches and teams that they are respected and valued, and their organization wants to support them in being the very best they can be.
